<p style="text-align: justify;">Quite a few companies fascinated in <a href="http://www.openviewpartners.com" target="_blank">content marketing</a> are not sure  about  where to begin. For one thing, it can be challenging to break  away from  the traditional  marketing methods of yesteryear  to put money  in  something so unfamiliar. But  the other challenge entails  making sure  that  the content you generate  is uniquely valuable to your target audience.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Not everyone’s  a writer after all, but  the good news is that not everyone <em>has </em> to be. There are a good number of people out there skilled  in the online  editorial practices that can speed  you on your way &#8212; you just have  to go  out and find  them.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>What does “editorial” even mean? And why should I care?<br />
</strong><br />
While applying an editorial into a vendor company might not make a lot of sense  to CEOs at first, the rewards are apparent. After all, one of the notions  behind content marketing is that everybody can become  a publisher. But   it’s important not to worry so much  about the <em>marketing</em> side of the equation that you forget about  the <em>content</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This is  where the editorial aspect of things comes into play. Journalists,  writers and editors are trained particularly in the art of generating   high quality content for a target demographic. With a <a href="http://blog.openviewpartners.com/blog/openview-venture-partners" target="_blank">content marketing  strategy</a>, your purpose is to do away with  the middleman (i.e. the ones those people traditionally work for) and engage the reader (customer) directly.  By actually hiring experts with those skill sets and doing work  with certified freelancers, you’re much more likely to see  a payoff from  your content investments.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The best news? These individuals will actually <em>want</em> to work with you. As everybody knows, the financial climate isn’t exactly the greatest one for journalists. Newspapers  have gone on  a steady downturn for  nearly  two decades. Back in  September, Michael Laden of <em>BusinessWeek</em> cited  information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BSL) where it showed that general newspaper  employment has decreased  more than  40%  since 1990. This dip  partly  coincided with the Internet boom, where  a lot of experienced or aspiring writers/editors transferred  to online  publishing, which peaked  around 2000-2001. However,  even though  a lot more people  of desirable demographics are getting their facts online  than ever before, those  very same online publishing companies are  following the path of  newspapers  and slashing editorial left and right (the very same BSL report discloses  that online publishing employment in 2009 was  down  almost 30% from its peak less than a decade earlier).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The  reasons for this are many (we’ve confronted a somewhat considerable recession  for one). What’s far more important, however, is that though online  publishing companies are reducing pay and seeking cheaper  options for keeping their audience base, vendors and expansion  companies are beginning to invest more seriously in quality content  practices as a way  of marketing themselves more effectively. When you  look at the figures above, those possibilities start to look  very enticing  to writers and editors – the types of individuals that are ideal  for content management and marketing.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>So how can editorial benefit you?<br />
</strong><br />
Experienced publishers have critical expertise that go far  beyond the simple  utilization  of proper grammar and style. Advanced search engine optimization (SEO) practices, calendaring tactics and topic strategizing are just some   of the abilities such people can offer  to help give  you a  <a href="http://blog.openviewpartners.com/blog/openview-venture-partners" target="_blank">competitive advantage</a> and make your company far more noticeable.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I’ll go into much more detail on exactly how these techniques lead to a  successful content management strategy in future posts. But in the  meantime, keep in mind that as the average customer becomes much more knowledgeable when  it comes to finding information online, he or she can also spot  a fraud  faster than ever. If you’re really serious about content marketing, consider  extending  your investment to individuals who know how to accomplish the job from a content viewpoint. If you don’t, your competitors surely  will.</p>

<h4 style="text-align: justify;">The art and science of generating the proper tagline for your product positioning</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Any experienced marketer understands that composing a tagline or slogan is a vital part of any marketing strategy; however, it is also fraught  with danger simply because taglines can go very wrong and produce precisely the  opposite effect of what is desired.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Creating a tagline is tough, but re=doing  or revamping  one is no less precarious  an undertaking as is crystal clear in the recent significantly debated decision by the National Pork Board to retire  their traditional tagline &#8220;The other White Meat&#8221;, for a supposedly much more modern tagline &#8221;Be inspired&#8221;.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">With the increase of <a href="http://blog.openviewpartners.com/blog/openview-venture-partners" target="_blank">content marketing</a>, inbound marketing and <a href="http://www.openviewpartners.com" target="_blank">influence  marketing</a>, marketers have additional opportunities to convey their message to  potential customers, and thus have to rely much less on paid advertising media to convey their taglines or slogans. They have much more room to move around  and  be creative in them, but nonetheless the fundamental principles stay  the same, and  the danger is nonetheless very much present. This is especially true for  technology marketers mainly because they also typically need to deal with the  tough task of encapsulating technical advantages in the straightforward,  jargon-free messaging to the masses.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">April Dunford, on her blog the Rocket Watcher, has just lately made a comment  on another concern with taglines in a great post entitled &#8220;Your Startup Tagline is Antisocial&#8221;.  She explains  that a lot of taglines are not written to be shared or  passed along by users to their friends basically because they have turned out to be   excessively  generic in attempting to be to the point  and following the 3 word-length  convention.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Certainly, some marketers propose doing away totally  with such cooked up  taglines that plague  corporate logos and marketing  collateral and replace them for long, more coherent  <a href="http://www.openviewpartners.com" target="_blank">product positioning</a> phrases or sentences.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Of course, there is still a place for a  seriously straightforward, concise product description, not only as a marketing  tool, but likewise  as an organization&#8217;s  strategic market positioning definition, a  concept I have looked into this  in a recent post.  However, the key is to generate a distinction between an effective product description and crafting  a viral marketing slogan and tagline, which is in fact both a science and an art.</p>
