But  the other challenge entails  making sure  that  the content you generate  is uniquely valuable to your target audience.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Not everyone’s  a writer after all, but  the good news is that not everyone <em>has </em> to be. <p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>What does “editorial” even mean? And why should I care?<br />

While applying an editorial into a vendor company might not make a lot of sense  to CEOs at first, the rewards are apparent. After all, one of the notions  behind content marketing is that everybody can become  a publisher. But   it’s important not to worry so much  about the <em>marketing</em> side of the equation that you forget about  the <em>content</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This is  where the editorial aspect of things comes into play. Journalists,  writers and editors are trained particularly in the art of generating   high quality content for a target demographic. With a <a href="http://blog.openviewpartners.com/blog/openview-venture-partners" target="_blank">content marketing  strategy</a>, your purpose is to do away with  the middleman (i.e. the ones those people traditionally work for) and engage the reader (customer) directly.  By actually hiring experts with those skill sets and doing work  with certified freelancers, you’re much more likely to see  a payoff from  your content investments.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The best news? These individuals will actually <em>want</em> to work with you. As everybody knows, the financial climate isn’t exactly the greatest one for journalists. Newspapers  have gone on  a steady downturn for  nearly  two decades. Back in  September, Michael Laden of <em>BusinessWeek</em> cited  information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BSL) where it showed that general newspaper  employment has decreased  more than  40%  since 1990. This dip  partly  coincided with the Internet boom, where  a lot of experienced or aspiring writers/editors transferred  to online  publishing, which peaked  around 2000-2001. However,  even though  a lot more people  of desirable demographics are getting their facts online  than ever before, those  very same online publishing companies are  following the path of  newspapers  and slashing editorial left and right (the very same BSL report discloses  that online publishing employment in 2009 was  down  almost 30% from its peak less than a decade earlier).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The  reasons for this are many (we’ve confronted a somewhat considerable recession  for one). What’s far more important, however, is that though online  publishing companies are reducing pay and seeking cheaper  options for keeping their audience base, vendors and expansion  companies are beginning to invest more seriously in quality content  practices as a way  of marketing themselves more effectively. <p style="text-align: justify;">To  each and every <a href="http://www.openviewpartners.com" target="_blank">expansion stage</a> marketing manager: the truth is that all  temporary spikes  in traffic will fade  away eventually, be it a TechCrunch  mention, a chance mention in the Wall Street Journal&#8217;s technology  pages, or a feature article in Inc.com. The same holds true in my  experience when reviewing  a prospect&#8217;s marketing performance as part of   our due diligence, or when  aiding portfolio company managers in  identifying marketing channels and attractive traffic sources.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However,  this is frequently forgotten in most online marketing channels review  processes. A lot of times, an inexperienced  manager will become enamored   with previous  viral successes  and try unsuccessfully  to reproduce those  instances. In some other cases, a marketing team will focus solely on their  competitor&#8217;s marketing sources and try  to replicate their excellent  performance  without recognizing that their competitior&#8217;s  success was accomplished by a  more exhaustive  marketing strategy, of which the traffic boosts  were  just the external outcomes.</p>

I would agree  that having your  brand in people&#8217;s consciousness  is nearly  as good as acquiring their  names for your email list. Evidently, it is still better if you can ultimately convert these brand conscious prospects into subscribed  readers, but at least  ephemeral  traffic can produce  something more  substantial.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Seems like, then, a marketer&#8217;s life is a continuous  uphill battle against diminishing returns and short-lived  prospects&#8217;  attention. However, there are a great deal  of resources out there to help the  ambitious  online marketers through the unending  process of research and  experimentation on virtually all  types of marketing channels.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>But before you do, take a les­son from our recent endeavor: you may be mis­un­der­stand­ing a </strong><strong>cru­cial  piece of the process.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">With the port­fo­lio com­pany in ques­tion, we jumped right into the  plan­ning ses­sion with a dis­cus­sion about the inputs, con­tent types,  chan­nels, and pos­si­ble influ­encers to tar­get.  Our con­ver­sa­tion soon stopped dead in its tracks; we  had not, up until this point, discussed  one of the most  impor­tant com­po­nents to any strat­egy: our <em>tar­gets</em>. Who, exactly,  are the targets of the influencer program?  Who are our <em>per­sonas</em>?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A tar­get per­sona  essentially is defined as  an amal­gam of char­ac­ter­is­tics rep­re­sen­ta­tive  of a mar­ket. Since your prod­uct or ser­vice  will not be attractive to everyone   (as much as you’d like it to), you take a group of them—a tar­get  segment—and iden­tify com­mon traits amongst the group. These then become your goals, or your “people.”</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In it, four dif­fer­ent types of per­sonas are delineated:</p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;">
<li>The <strong>pri­mary per­sona</strong> defines the      pri­mary user of the par­tic­u­lar inter­face or entire product.</li>
<li>The <strong>sec­ondary per­sona</strong> is another      user of the  pri­mary inter­face, one for whom we will make accom­mo­da­tions so       long as  there is no compromise as it relates to the primary persona&#8217;s experience.</li>
<li>The <strong>neg­a­tive per­sona</strong> is the user      for whom  we explic­itly will not add prod­uct fea­tures or capa­bil­i­ties       because to do so will pull our prod­uct in a direc­tion we do not desire  to go.</li>
<li>The <strong>buyer per­sona</strong> refers to the buyer      (either an  exten­sion of an exist­ing per­sona or a non-user) whose biases      and  needs  should be addressed somewhere  in the prod­uct and/or the mar­ket­ing  material.</li>
</ol>
<p style="text-align: justify;">You should also construct a detailed, defined char­ac­ter from the  infor­ma­tion you  researched and compiled  on your tar­get mar­ket (culled from the mar­ket  research you’ve hope­fully executed).This means  assign­ing a name, age,  socioe­co­nomic class, needs, pain-points, and more. <strong>Remem­ber</strong>:   you must revise your personas on a regular basis.  The mar­ket   changes  rad­i­cally and often,  along with people and their tasted.   Assum­ing that a one-time demar­ca­tion of your per­sonas exon­er­ates  you from  the need to  do it again is a sure­fire way to mis­un­der­stand  your ever-changing targets.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Now you’re play­ing with “the power of the per­sona.”   The communication process with your personas seems easier when you are viewing your product offerings through their eyes.   Pain-point fea­tures  receive the priority, super­flu­ous infor­ma­tion is  cut,  the value of your product now stands as  the cen­ter­piece of stream­lined prod­uct mes­sag­ing, among other things. <strong> Devise  your copy­writ­ing using <em>their </em>voice.</strong> If  you developed your persona well,  you should know how they act and speak.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Per­sona dis­cov­ery isn’t as uncomplicated as it may appear— many pitfalls can arise that can stifle your progress.  The biggest and most com­mon  mis­take in craft­ing per­sonas is con­fus­ing the con­cept with <a href="http://labs.openviewpartners.com/" target="_blank">mar­ket seg­men­ta­tion</a>.  Mar­ket seg­men­ta­tion is about divid­ing your mar­ket into sub­groups   that are the most applicable and important  to your busi­ness. Per­sonas are about human­iz­ing  your approach to need-fulfillment. These con­cepts are com­pli­men­tary,  and they have mutu­ally exclu­sive principles—but  they are definitely  <em>not </em>iden­ti­cal.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">With a solid sched­ule of revi­sions and a con­stant  stream of  updates, your newly devel­oped per­sonas will support your busi­ness develop  and evolve. Per­sonas are  the back­bone of  every successful  influ­encer mar­ket­ing strat­egy; don’t start your endeav­ors with­out them!</p>

Even though  Gowalla  doesn&#8217;t  have the identical sizable user base as Foursquare, they have established themselves to be an innovative  leader in the LBS space.</p>
